Is Your Website Effective

Websites are an essential for a business, so just how effective is your business' website? To be an effective website, it must have three elements

It must be able to be found by Google and other search engines
It must be user friendly which means quick to load and easy to navigate
It must be content/information rich which means more then just listing what you have to sell or the service you offer.

Lets look at each of these individually:

Recently the phone company announced that it wanted to discontinue publishing the phone book and why not for when was the last time you used it especially used the Yellow Pages? People's fingers are not walking through the Yellow Pages anymore but across a keyboard as they search the internet. Where do they search, over 80% of the people looking for a new business will use a search engine with the majority of those using Google. To have an effective website, your business needs to appear on the first two pages of a Google search. Nothing is more frustrating then having to wait for some fancy introduction to load, many people will just leave the site if it takes more than a few seconds to do so. Once there, can people find their way around your site easily? Forget about using drop down menus, they are the easiest to click on the wrong link. Clean out your browsing history, for Internet Explorer it is Tools>Internet Options and under the General tab locate Browsing History. Click on the Delete button. Now enter your website address and see how long it takes to load. Remember, people are not patient!
Third it needs to be content/information rich which means your website is more then just "selling" your product or service. People should be able to find relevant related information. For instance, I am doing a website for a store which sells baby furniture and on that site there is an article about crib safety. Does this relate to the business, of course, but it is not trying to sell something.

Is Your Website Ready for Mobile

More and more people are using their mobile phone to access the internet! Opera reports that 50 million people called up more than 23 billion Web pages last January using Opera Mini. This does not include those using the iPhone , Blackberry, or Android which uses other browsers. Conservatively, the number for all is around 80 to 90 million. This figure is expected to grow exponentially for in January of 2009, there were 22 million people using their cell phone daily to access the internet.

This represents about one-third of all cell phone users. So as you are out, look around and figure about one out of every three people using a cell phone is a potential client. Speed up your computer

We all want our computers to work faster but how do you do this without buying a new computer? Simple, add RAM! RAM which stands for Random Access Memory and often referred to as "memory" greatly affects the speed of your computer. That is the more RAM, the faster your computer operates...that is to a point. Assuming that you have a 32 bit operating system which if you do not know, then assume it is a 32 bit system, then rather you are using Windows 2000, XP, Vista, or Windows 7; the maximum amount is 4 GB. Which means if you install 6 GB of RAM, all your computer will use is 4 GB. Some computers will handle less RAM then the maximum that your operating system can handle but you usually are safe in installing up to 2 GB of RAM.

Adding RAM can be as simple as unscrewing a cover and sticking the RAM in rather you have a laptop or a desktop. If you are going to do it yourself, then it would be best to look up the manual for your computer online and see how to install the RAM. If you are uncomfortable opening up your computer, then a professional can quickly do it. Do not know what kind of RAM to use, you can use the Crucial Memory Adviser™ tool to determine the RAM you need.

Often in laptops and sometimes in desktops, you will have to remove one stick of RAM in order to install more because of the limitations of slots available. For instance, you might have 512 MB of RAM and want to add 1 GB (1,000 MB) more. If you have a laptop, the RAM might be two 256 MB sticks of RAM with only two slots available. Therefore you will have to remove one of those 256 MB of RAM to install the 1 GB giving you a total of 1.2 GB of RAM.

Upgrading to Windows 7

After much frustration with Vista, Microsoft has now released Windows 7 which is faster and easier to use then Vista or even XP. But should you upgrade to Windows 7? The answer is yes but wait for the first service pack to come out which should do so within a few months. Although unlike Vista, Windows 7 does not seem to have major "bugs" in the initial release; it is still best to wait for someone else to test it out and corrections made.

The next question is can you upgrade? If you are running Vista you should be able to upgrade without any problem but I would still run the Upgrade Advisor which will allow you to be sure that your computer is compatible with Windows 7. You also will want to run the Software Compatibility Guide which allows you to see which software will work and which will not with Windows 7. There are limitations of which Windows 7 product you can upgrade to. Basically you can upgrade to same Vista edition you were running, for instance if you were running either Vista Home Basic or Premium you could upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium but not the Professional (business) edition.

If you are running XP, then there is a problem in upgrading. Microsoft says that you will need to do a custom installation or "clean installation" which means that all your programs, settings, and files will be lost.
